Pretty in Pink

By Barbara Baird

To pink or not to pink, that is the question when it comes to outdoors gear for women. These ladies have some red-hot opinions about it:

Brenda Valentine: I liked the color pink much more when it identified the gender of a newborn or represented support for breast cancer awareness. I will hardly wear it now, even on casual clothing, since it has literally been shoved down our throats as a marketing ploy.

Kelly Gotch: Pink seems to be finding it’s way into everything hunting related, showing girls that they can have fun with hunting and make it their own. Personally, I’m not a big fan of the color, but I think it’s great to have the option available. What does pink camouflage blend in with anyway?

"If a company just throws a splash of pink on a product that truly is not designed to fit a female, it can be perceived as a bit condescending." —Brenda Potts

Brenda Potts: Having lived through the early ‘pink it and shrink it’ mentality of many companies, I must admit I struggle with pink accents on some products. I think the color pink can have positive appeal to younger generations and communicates that females are welcome in the sport. But on the other end of the argument, if a company just throws a splash of pink on a product that truly is not designed to fit a female, it can be perceived as a bit condescending.

Kirstie Pike: While Próis dabbles very little in the pink market, the emergence of pink gear is definitely a draw for many women. I have found that women are often split with regards to the color — while some women are thrilled with ‘everything pink,’ others are against the overwhelming emergence of pink outdoor gear. Whatever draws women to the outdoors and keeps them there can’t be all bad.

"I think it just goes to show that you can be a girl but still be out in the woods." —Tiffany Lakosky

Tiffany Lakosky: I love pink! Right now I am shooting the Mathews Passion in pink, my quick fletch is pink and I have pink tabs on my camo. I think it just goes to show that you can be a girl but still be out in the woods.
